VW Golf MK6

Golf GTi Cabriolet

It's been over 30 years since we've had a Golf GTi Cab. In 1980 the Mk1 was a 1.8 producing 112 bhp. As you'd expect things have moved on and the new Mk6 Golf GTi cabriolet is a 2.0 Turbo kicking out 210 ps.

Performance

The soft top Golf uses the same trusty engine from the hard top version. Linked to a standard 6 speed manual or the optional dual-clutch 6 speed DSG, 60mph from standing appears in 7.3 seconds (the tin roof Golf does 6.9 seconds). Top speed is 147mph but we suggest you might want the roof up. The chrome twin pipe exhaust has a beautiful rasp to it at the best of times, let alone with the roof down... picture yourself now.

The roof

The fully automatic insulated fabric roof closes in just 9.5 seconds and can be operated at speeds up to 18mph. Handy when you've failed to spot those dark clouds approaching.

Interior

The Golf cab GTi is a true 4 seater sporting tartan 'Jacara' cloth as standard while the optional 'Vienna' leather would really finish it off a treat and match the leather multi-function steering wheel, handbrake and gear lever gaiter. The interior of the roof and pillars are black as are the door and dash inserts. Brushed metal pedals complete the GTi appeal.

Exterior

Some would say it's a normal GTi with no roof. But when was a Golf GTi ever normal? 17 inch 'Monza' alloys, the red edged honeycomb front grille, smoked LED rear lights and vertical front fog lights. What's not to like?

Safety

ABS and electronic diff lock/traction control as standard goes without saying but the Golf cab really steps up its game with automatic rollover protection deployment, front and side head/thorax airbags as well as driver knee bags. Volkswagen has achieved an outstanding 96% rating for adult occupany safety and an overall 5 star NCAP crash testing rating.

Production & pricing

The Mk6 Golf GTi cabriolet is expected in the latter half of 2012 with pricing still to be established. With the hard top 3dr GTi starting at £25,320 you can at least get a gauge of what to expect. More details as we have them.
